Mathematics professor Dr. John Ethan Hill became West Virginia’s eighth football coach in 1900, and the seventh to do so on a volunteer basis. Hill attended Yale where he was familiar with the game and he attempted to instill some of Yale’s popular Eastern grid tactics in WVU’s play resulting in a 4-3 record in 1900.
