Bobby Dodd protégé Jim Carlen came to West Virginia from Georgia Tech where he built the Mountaineers from the ground up with a smothering defense and an innovative passing attack orchestrated by offensive coordinator Bobby Bowden. Carlen’s teams got progressively better until peaking in 1969 when the Mountaineers won 10 games, defeated South Carolina in the Peach Bowl and finished ranked in the Top 20.
