Mechanical engineering professor E.L. Emory was appointed by WVU president Eli Marsh to supervise a group of students who formed the first football squad. Practicing in a cow pasture, only one member of the squad – Emory included – had ever played the game played before. Their lack of preparation was reflected in their 72-0 loss to Washington & Jefferson in the only game played that year.
