Bio
Dartmouth graduate Clarence Spears was responsible for the first “Golden Era” of West Virginia football. Spears’ 1922 squad won 10 games with one tie, including an East-West Bowl victory over Gonzaga, but his one-loss teams in 1923 and 1924 were considered among the best in the country. A season-ending defeat to Washington & Jefferson cost West Virginia a trip to the Rose Bowl in 1923, and a one-touchdown loss at Pitt kept WVU from a Rose Bowl appearance in 1924. He won 30 games over four seasons and his .808 winning percentage is still the best in school history. Spears is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
